## The thesis, stated precisely (v2 form, per VERDICT.md)

Thailand and the United States each installed the same globally diffused
nation-making toolkit — prestige center, schools, names and symbols, an enemy,
a gate — which absorbed the culturally proximate wherever structural membership
was offered and failed violently wherever it was withheld; and their 2026
strains differ by design: the United States is in the ebb phase of a
documented, thermostatically driven intake cycle, while Thailand is prying
open, under demographic pressure, a blood-law gate it built shut.

RETRACTED from v1, on the record: (a) "independently invented" — the machines
are two installations of one European-diffused module (the paper's own §2.3
proved this against v1); (b) a Thai "cycle" — Thailand has closed its gate once
(1949) and cracked it once (2024); no cyclical claim is made for Thailand;
(c) the "religion-and-script" boundary law — killed by Satun (Muslim-majority,
same 1909 treaty, no insurgency) and by Lanna's own Tai Tham script; replaced
by an explicitly-labeled n=1 conjecture (religion fused with distinct
literary-legal identity + rival state tradition + treaty border against
co-ethnic homeland + deposed-not-co-opted elite + atrocity memory).

## What is established, and how well

## What the paper will be attacked on, and the answers

- "The toolkit is generic (Gellner/Anderson)" → conceded and weaponized: §4's
  variance-identification paragraph — same module, maximally different hosts,
  so outcome variance isolates receiving-society structure.
- "Patani conjecture is overfitted" → yes, n=1, and the paper says so in text.
  Do not let a future draft harden it into a law again.
- "Thai homogeneity was suppression" → Objection 1 reply: two programs
  (absorption + suppression) — keep both in view; Fig 1 now labels constructs.
- "2026 is rupture, not ebb" → Objection 3 reply + falsifiers; do not soften
  the falsifiers in future drafts.
- "99% census figure untraced" → hedged everywhere as characterization of the
  series; if anyone locates the actual census volumes (สำมะโนประชากร 2503/2513),
  pin it and upgrade the tier.

## What changed across drafts

- v1 (23 pp): unified cyclical thesis; religion-and-script law; no Satun, no
  Great Migration, no post-1957 Thailand, two-tier audit. Killed on review.
- v2 (26 pp): everything in VERDICT.md orders 1–17. All MUSTs and SHOULDs
  executed; nothing declined.

## Error log (append-only; corrections are often in a non-obvious direction)

1. Federal Indian boarding schools: v1 research said 408 (DOI Vol. I, 2022).
   CORRECT: 417 (DOI Vol. II, Jul 2024 — same volume as the ≥973 deaths).
   Never pair 408 with 973.
2. Thai registered migrant workers: first sweep said 4,080,613 (Amarin/DOE,
   May 2025) — could not be independently confirmed. CORRECT anchor: ~3.65M
   (DOE via Thairath, Oct 2025); 3.10M permitted (MWG/OHCHR, Mar 2025). Paper
   says "roughly 3–4 million."
3. Stateless fast-track total: use exact 483,626, not "~483,000."
4. Surname Act year: 22 March B.E. 2455 = 1913 Gregorian ONLY because the old
   Siamese year began 1 April; some sources say 1912. Keep the footnote.
5. 1924 quota caps: 165,000 belongs to the 1924 act; 150,000 to the 1927/29
   national-origins formula. Don't merge them.
6. v1 text used UNVERIFIED Isan figures (22M; 11.5% GDP) with no hedge,
   violating data.py's own rule. v2 hedges ("commonly cited, admittedly soft").
   Watch for this class of error: the rule is only as good as its enforcement.
7. v1's "neighbors lynched" (plural, WWI German-Americans): only one documented
   lethal lynching — Robert Prager, Collinsville IL, 5 Apr 1918. Singular.
8. Burmese are not linguistically close to Thai (Sino-Tibetan vs Tai); the
   proximity is confessional (Theravada), and Shan are the Tai-speaking group.
   v1 said "nearer to Thainess" without this care.
9. FY2023 border figure: 2,045,838 is USBP apprehensions BETWEEN ports of
   entry; total SW encounters incl. ports ≈2.48M. Do not conflate the series.
10. Thammasat 6 Oct 1976 toll: official ~45–46; witness/scholarly estimates
    100+; body-handlers reported 500+. Always give the dispute.

## Publishing note (Phase 7)

Realistic paths, ranked: (1) personal site / GitHub with the full audit trail —
the trail is the credential; (2) an essay venue (Aeon/Palladium/Asterisk type)
with the apparatus linked; (3) SSRN-style working-paper archive with DOI.
Peer review only for a narrower rewrite (e.g., "The gate as consolidation
window: immigration pauses and assimilation in Thailand and the United
States") with the Satun conjecture properly comparative. The paper is labeled
a position essay / working paper and discloses AI assistance; keep that label.

## Housekeeping

- Images: run fetch_images.py where Wikimedia is reachable; check
  _sources.tsv licenses; rebuild — plates auto-replaced.
- Old drafts: build_paper_v1.py and the v1 PDF stay in the folder untouched.
- If revising again: copy build_paper_v2.py → build_paper_v3.py; rerun
  Phase 4 (attack → defense → verdict) on v2 first.
